These Are The Most Popular Halloween Costumes By Year

Do you know what the most popular Halloween costume was in the year you were born?

If you go out on Halloween, you know that every year, there’s always one costume that you see every single person wearing – the costume of the year!

This year, I’m betting we’ll see millions of Harley Quinn’s… but interestingly enough Joker’s better half was already the most POPULAR costume in 2015 before Suicide Squad even came out!

1990 – Ninja Turtle

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie premiere in the 90s and well, their popularity never stopped!

1991 – Terminator

The original Terminator came out in 1984 but the sequel dropped in 1991 and caused a spike in Arnold Schwarzenegger wannabes!

1992- Catwoman

Thanks to Michelle Pfeiffer’s iconic Catwoman in Batman Returns.

1993 – Barney

Barney and friends debuted on PBS in 1992 and everyone wanted to dress up as the purple dino!

1994 – Power Rangers

Might Morphin Power Rangers debuted in 1993 and all the kids and adults were dressing up as their favorite range. (Pink, in case anyone wants to know, was my fave!)

1995 – Uhura from “Star Trek”

Two shows aired during this time:  Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager!

1996 – Ghostface from “Scream”

Scaring kids since 1996! The movie debuted in 1996 but the iconic mask is still popular today – considering the TV show!

1997 – Batman

George Clooney made a handsome Batman in 1997 and all the dudes wanted in!

1998 – Kenny from “South Park”

The first episode premiered in 1997 and there were a lot of people donning that orange jacket in 98!

1999 – Neo from “The Matrix”

Those sunglasses were really attractive…

2000 – Austin Powers

By this year, 2 Austin Powers movies had debuted and another one was in the works. Shaggy baby!

2001 – Hermione from “Harry Potter”

Oh Harry, sorry but Hermione was actually the most popular wizard for Halloween! The first movie hit theaters 2 weeks after Halloween!

2002 – Spider-Man

Tobey Maguire brought life back to Spidey in 2002!

2003 – Jack Sparrow from “Pirates of the Caribbean”

Johnny Depp made Cpt. Jack Sparrow iconic!

2004 – Spider-Man

The return of the… Spider-Man. Two years after the first movie, the second one dominated the box office again!

2005 – Darth Vader from Star Wars

In 2005, Episode III: Revenge of the Sith premiered and the Star Wars fans reemerged again during the haunting hour.

2006 – V from “V for Vendetta”

Some of you might think this is A… but it’s actually V and he was popping in 2006!

2007 – Hannah Montana

Who could ever forget that blonde wig and white go-go boots? Kids were rocking that outfit EVERYWHERE… and parents weren’t happy… probably.

2008 – The Joker from “The Dark Knight”

This was a particularly popular costume. Not only was Heath Ledger incredible as The Joker in The Dark Knight… but he died right after the role.

2009 – Edward Cullen from “Twilight”

Glittery. Smoldering. Twilight costumes were so in when the movies finally dropped, although there were more Edward Cullen’s than Bella’s!

2010 – Snooki from “Jersey Shore”

You know you’ve made it when you become a Halloween costume… the most popular one. Snooki became a household name and everyone was rocking that bee-hive ‘do!

2011 – Sue Sylvester from “Glee”

Track suit and all. Jane Lynch’s Sue was the best-selling costume two years after Glee premiered!

2012 – Psy in “Gangnam Style”

The song became the number one Youtube video in 2012… and you’ll never get that song out of your head.

2013 – Miley Cyrus

This time not as Hannah Montana but as herself… in a bear leotard, the look she made popular at the 2013 MTV VMAs!

2014 – Maleficent

Thanks to the Sleeping Beauty remake and Angelina Jolie, everyone was rocking black horns.

2015 – Harley Quinn from “Suicide Squad”

Even though the movie dropped in 2016, Harley Quinn was the top selling costume last year because people were so excited for it. How impressive is that?
