Ohio Is The First State To Make First-Offense Pet Cruelty A Felony

Win for the animals!

A new law went into effect in Ohio today which makes any first-offense pet cruely a felony.

Gov. John Kasich signed the bill stating that anyone who causes serious physical harm to a companion animal will be charged with a fifth degree felony.

Punishments range from six months to a year in jail and a $2,500 fine.

Harm includes depriving a pet of food, water, shelter and infliting pain.

Additionally, anyone who abuses a police dog, horse or service animal will serve mandatory prison time.
