Best Songs About New York In Honor Of 9/11

Today marks the 15th anniversary of 9/11, we put a list together of ten songs that we love that are about New York.

We pay homage to the classics like Frank Sinatra, highlight new songs by artists we love including Lady Gaga and even added a couple you may not have heard yet.

Check them out. #NeverForget

Jay-Z and Alicia Keys – “Empire State Of Mind”

We had to lead with a song that went wild on the airwaves. Jay-Z and Alicia Keys created the New York anthem, Empire State Of Mind,  that exploded onto the scene in 2009. Everywhere you turned, this song was being played. In fact, it’s still a staple at most New York events.

Madonna – “I Love New York”

Although she takes a little dig at our lovely city of angels, we can’t help but like this song by Madonna about her beloved city of New York. She moved there to pursue her music career in 1977, and considering how successful she has been since then, we understand her expressing her adoration for New York in the song, I Love New York.

Lady Gaga – “Marry The Night”

While serious Gaga fans most likely already know this, some of you may have missed the interview with E! News where Lady Gaga revealed that Marry The Night, off of her Born This Way album, is indeed about New York City. Being a very proud New Yorker herself, it comes as no surprise that Gaga would write a sort of love song to her city. She revealed that “Marry The Night” is about her moving back to New York, and finding the courage to admit to herself that she “just wanted to live in Brooklyn and make music.”

Beastie Boys  “No Sleep Till Brooklyn”

A list about New York wouldn’t be complete without one of the greatest American musical success stories out of New York city, the Beastie Boys. Finding critical acclaim with their debut album “License to Ill” in 1986, the Beastie Boys hit us with a track that has stood the test of time, No Sleep Till Brooklyn. The single is said to be about the chaos that comes with being on tour, and that the boys could only find time to rest when they made it back to their beloved city of Brooklyn.

Frank Sinatra – “New York, New York”

We don’t really feel the need to explain why this classic is on our list, but for any of the young folk who aren’t up to speed on Mr. Sinatra, here is your introduction. Frank Sinatra is a master of jazz vocals, and is the perfect example of old New York charm. If you only needed to know one song about New York, this is it.

B.O.BNew York, New York

B.O.B, one of the newer artists on our list, took the Sinatra classic we just mentioned and gave it a hip hop spin. He made the song for the soundtrack for a video game called Crysis 2. We like this track because it takes an older song and gives it a fresh look while still respecting and honoring the original classic.

John Lennon New York City

Another classic artist that you better have heard before is the one and only John Lennon. Born and raised in Liverpool, Lennon moved to beautiful New York City in 1971. This song was written only a year later, and describes the ease that he and his wife Yoko Ono felt about wandering the streets of NY even though the Nixon administration attempted to deport them. Yup, they were so outspoken about their disagreement about the Vietnam war, that the government tried to make them go away. A little history lesson for the day.

Black Eyed Peas – “Cali To New York”

A list on AMP Radio wouldn’t be complete without a track by the Black Eyed Peas. One of the more light-hearted songs on our list, this single keeps it simple; It’s about being on tour, and flying back and forth from one coast to the next.

The Black Keys – “Brooklyn Bound”

The Black Keys found commercial success in 2010 with their album, Brothers. That doesn’t mean that they weren’t making bad ass tracks before we may have heard of them. Enter, “Brooklyn Bound” off their debut album, The Big Come Up. This track shows us the true rock & roll sound that makes The Black Keys so powerful. We’d like to think that Rihanna or Gaga would jam to this song so hard. SO hard.

Billy Joel – “New York State Of Mind”

We end the list with a song that is a true New York anthem, a pure love song dedicated to the allure and draw that makes so many people fall in love with the city . Billy Joel confesses that no matter where he goes, when he needs to get back down to reality he always finds his way back to his home of New York.

We hope you enjoyed our list of songs, if we missed any let us know in the comments.
