Russell Brand married Katy Perry in 2010 after dating for a year, only to end their whirlwind romance fourteen months later. Now Brand is finally speaking out about why he called it quits.

In a recent interview with 60 Minutes in Australia, the comedian explained that he and the young pop star didn’t really have that much in common. Though it was sad, Brand admits it was the best thing they could have done.

“Sometimes it goes well, sometimes it don’t,” he explained. “But if you sort of sense there’s an incompatibility, then in any relationship regardless of the status of the individual, it kind of is best to go separate ways.”

Though Brand says he would like to get married in the future, he has realized that he needs to find a woman who shares his interests.

“I think if you’re someone who’s really into mountain biking, it would be good to go out with someone who’s into mountain biking and if you’re really into Eastern mysticism, go out with someone else who’s into Eastern mysticism,” he said. “I think if you’re a devoted tennis professional and you get married to a crystal meth addict, you might have trouble.”

Maybe Katy is taking Russell’s advice. Recently she’s been seen with fellow musician John Mayer.
